Tomorrow is said to be ‘the most depressing day of the year’ or so I’ve heard. It’s a combination of bank accounts running rather low, New Year’s resolutions that you have perhaps already failed unless your a trooper and extra determined to achieve them and the winter weather is still something we need to wake up to for the next couple of weeks. With the excitement of Christmas and New Year all well and truly finished, it’s important to replace this excitement with something else to look forward to.

I’ve done a little bit of research and with a massive thanks to the guys over at Pukka, there are a couple of natural ways that can help fight those post-Christmas blues.

One of the ways that I’ve found comfort this month is by having something new to concentrate on. Not only is it great for engaging the mind but it can be extremely beneficial for your mood and your wellbeing. I’ve recently started a new job at a place that I really love. It’s giving me new skills to learn, new people to meet so I’m spending time with others rather than on my own overthinking things. It doesn’t need to be something extreme like starting a new job but you can perhaps learn a language, enhance your photography or writing skills, take up a new hobby.

There’s nothing that I love more than increasing the ‘hygge’ in my lifestyle when I’m feeling a bit down in the dumps. I’ve touched upon this before but the Danish concept of hygge is about being together and have a cosy place to relax your mind. I’ve been spending my evenings in a candlelit room surrounded with fairy lights reading John Green’s Turtle and having plenty of herbal teas. My favourite is wild apple & cinnamon*; it’s such a warming tea with chamomile flowers that soothe anxiety and helps you sleep better. It’s been nice to spend some time away from looking at the screen constantly.

I feel so much better when I’m not stuck inside for days on end. Not only seeing the daylight can stimulate a ‘happy hormone’ but getting some form of exercise can throw off a low mood, relieves stress and releases those feel-good endorphins similar to the ones that you get from eating chocolate. I’ve been looking into going to an exercise class or perhaps swimming once a week because I’ve missed doing things like that. It makes me feel good!

Everyone is always trying to eat better including me. I can only imagine how many people have decided to join Slimming World or Weight Watchers these past few weeks but it’s not just about what you eat that can help you feel better. When Pukka sent me their new wonder berry green tea*, I was surprised how beneficial it can be for the immune system. Now anyone who knows me understands that I’m not a huge tea-lover but a cup of this has really helped improve my skin and my immune system. It tastes more like hot fruit juice rather than green tea which makes it all the more inviting when I wake up in the morning.
