Hello, Again.

Hello, Again.

It feels like yesterday when I opened up my laptop and created The July Journal, my old little corner of the internet where I could ramble on about my favourite bath bombs from Lush and the makeup hauls that I used to buy from Superdrug. I remember feeling so happy when I could buy one of Dorkface’s headers with my college money so that it could feel like a properly designed blog. This was over eight years ago and I’ve had a lot of ups and downs since then. We’ve moved to WordPress. I’ve had periods of time where I have posted a lot and then not at all but after nearly three years not knowing which direction I wanted to take, I’m back.

This little corner of the internet will always be mine. I welcome you, new and old readers to “Yasmina Magdy”, my fresh new blog where I can continue to develop my photography, my writing style and to share my life with you to enjoy. This space will always be the first and last place I want to document things whether that be delicious food, my style, favourites that I come across or just simple life updates about where I am traveling to or visiting.

My blog has been a place where I’ve grown as a person. I’ve developed new skills and become more confident. Nowadays, I believe people don’t tend to read blogs because the industry has become over saturated but that’s not why I started and that is also why I have decided to come back. It isn’t about the numbers, it is about having a place to call your own. A place where you feel comfortable to share your thoughts, to inspire others or to simply escape from all the negativity the online world can bring. I want this to be a space where you can feel comforted and understood but also a space where I can share my passions and interests.

I still believe that blogs are cool. Our opinions are taken seriously now compared to when I first started typing up posts. Before I buy a product, I tend to look at reviews from bloggers to see what their thoughts are. The amount of opportunities are amazing and so exciting. You can use it as a form of advertising and share your link on a CV to get your dream job. There are no rules in what to write or say because you can really make this space yours.

So, I want you to grab your hot chocolate and get cosy. Enjoy clicking through all my content, new and old!

Postcards From Paris

Postcards From Paris

Two years ago this month I travelled to Paris with University thinking that it will be the start of many more European adventures. Little did I know that a month later the pandemic would change quite a lot of things but we aren’t reflecting on that part. I thought it is about time I shared my trip to Paris and why I want to go back so badly!

We travelled to Paris via the train and Eurostar on the 11th February. I’ve never been on the Eurostar before but I found it quite comfortable and it didn’t feel as though it took as long as what it did. I spent the majority of the journey playing on my Nintendo Switch just to entertain me a little bit. We stayed at St Christopher’s Inn which wasn’t too far from the centre of Paris I believe. I shared my room with Chloe, Isabelle and Maxx but we all had such a good time. On the first night, we didn’t adventure too far but we did experience a very expensive McDonald’s. I couldn’t get over how busy it was especially so late at night but I suppose that’s because I’m not used to living in the city centre or a capital.

The first day we could do whatever we fancied so we each picked something that we wanted to do and off we went. We were the last out of the hostel from our group so we managed to hunt down the metro station and work out not only how to buy a set of tickets but how to navigate to where we wanted to be all by ourselves. I know, call us independent! Let’s just ignore the fact it took us nearly 45 minutes to understand the systems but we got there in the end.

First up was the Louvre Museum but before that we decided to get breakfast at a lovely little café called Le Café Marly. We had a selection of pastries, hot chocolate and fresh orange juice to fill us up before heading into the museum. Obviously, the Louvre is well known for the Monna Lisa which I would have loved to have seen properly but the queue was so long just to get a photo. We opted for taking a glance from the sidelines and reading about the painting on an infographic stand instead. I knew that the museum was big but I didn’t expect it to have so many paintings and statues. I was amazed by it all and felt a little bit overwhelmed but it was incredible! I’m pretty sure I didn’t even get to see everything that was there either which is one of the many reasons I would love to go back to Paris.

After we left the Louvre Museum, we down towards Champs-Elysées which is an iconic street with plenty of high street shops and designer stores such as Gucci, Louis Vuitton and Adidas. We did a little bit of retail therapy before heading towards the Eiffel Tower. Gucci had some stunning displays that I felt a little bit under dressed walking round in a pair of jeans, Converse and a denim jacket. Adidas really did impress me; some of their displays included plus-size models which made the store feel size inclusive something that I have never seen in the UK. As soon as I saw the Eiffel Tower I was in awe and that was without seeing it at night when it was lit up and sparkled with lights every hour. It was spectacular! I wish we had enough time to have travelled up it but unfortunately we didn’t and everyone who I was with wasn’t too keen on how high it would have been.

We ended the first night with a chilled trip back to the hostel and having dinner at a restaurant near the closest metro station. One thing that I quickly realised when in Paris that 90% of places to eat are called café so I found it very confusing figuring out where we had actually eaten on this trip. I do know that the cheese burger tasted amazing though!

The second day was the main reason for the trip. We headed off to Premiére Vision. This is an exhibition that brings together creative suppliers and buyers globally. The idea is so that all the players within raw materials and services can effectively assist fashion professionals to develop their collections by providing forward thinking analysis of evolving trends and market conditions. There were talks and so many stalls in a range of halls to explore. There was: Manufacturing, Leather, Accessories, Jewel Focus, Designs, Sport and Tech, Textiles, Fabric Selections, S/S21 Perspectives and Tradeshow for Fashion.

I spoke to a lovely guy who works for Polygiene who explained that their aims are to create technology clothing to help clothes stay fresh and odour free for longer. Did you know that two thirds of the environmental impact of apparel occurs during consumer use? We use 65% CO2 gases, 73% energy consumption and 54% water just to wash our clothes! As of February 2020, they have worked with a range of brands including Adidas, Millet, The North Face and Champion to name a few. I went round the exhibition with Abbie, from the year above me, and Ulli, another girl studying Fashion. It was such a lovely day and I left Premiére Vision feeling so inspired and even more in love with my course and what I was studying to be involved with.

After we got back to the hostel, we headed out for dinner on our last night. Just so we could see the Eiffel Tower one last time, we found a restaurant called Le Tribeca that catered to all of our needs. Chloe and I shared a baked Camembert and had a glass of red wine for starters. I felt very French! When we got back to the hostel, most of our group headed downstairs to the bar for a drink and a bit of a boogie. It was actually really enjoyable although I did feel a bit sorry for myself the following morning.

It was travel day again on the Friday and we finished our little Paris trip off with pancakes or crêpes as the French like to call it. I chose Chocolate and Banana which tasted divine! Before getting the Eurostar back to London, I picked up some macaroons for the journey home.

Overall my time in Paris was most definitely the best education trip that I have been on. My tutors, Freya and Marissa, had done a really good job organising it all and the girls who I had spent my time with made the trip extremely enjoyable with lots of memories to cherish. I hope I can go back to Paris soon so I can enjoy seeing some more of the different sights that the city has to offer.

Have you ever been to Paris before? What European city shall I travel to next?

6 Things I Want From 2022

6 Things I Want From 2022

Happy New Year!

To put it bluntly, these past two years have been difficult. My anxiety has been up and down and I am feeling quite uncertain about 2022. In order to inject a bit of positivity into the year ahead I am writing a list of things that I want to achieve over the next twelve months. Here it goes…

1. I’m currently writing this list in November, jobless and not feeling very positive hence why my first one is a job. I would love to be able to have an apprenticeship or just to be able to work in marketing, social media or PR. It’s what I am the most interested in and I am ready to kickstart my career. I’ve worked in many different places for work experience within the industry to the point that I know what I am looking for but the industry has been super busy over the Christmas season that hardly anyone has been hiring, fingers crossed that this changes now that we are saying hello to January.

2. I really want to work on my blog a lot more. I have been quiet on this space ever since I started my degree but I have really enjoyed getting back into writing on my little space. Now I am not promising anything spectacular but I am stripping it back to 2014 when numbers wasn’t a thing. I am going to enjoy posting what I like and hopefully some of you might find something you enjoy reading or find useful. I’m not setting myself a goal because it is just going to be my little space to ramble about my thoughts.

3. I want to live more in the moment. I’ve spoken about this before on my blog but since all the lockdowns have lifted I feel an amount of pressure to publish everything on social media and to say yes to absolutely every opportunity when really you just want to live in the moment sometimes. I’ve stopped taking my phone out on dog walks because I would find myself flicking on social media when really I could be enjoying what is going on around me.

4. I am learning to be kind to myself. I have been keeping a good things journal since March last year and it has done wonders for my mental health. Whenever I have felt a little bit down or rubbish about myself, I have been reading them all and straightaway feel ten times better. Since dealing with depression and anxiety, I’ve realised that even the smallest of things such as getting dressed for the day.

5. I am the worst when it comes to impulsive spending. If I want something, I just need to buy it straight away but I’ve been trying to work on this and want to continue to do so this year. I’ve been putting £15 into my Help To Buy ISA each month which I know isn’t a lot but it is teaching me to save money. Just before December I opened up a savings account and I am currently working out how much I can afford to save each month. I’ve been seeing all these TikTok videos on my for you page with different money saving ideas or challenges so I will probably pick one of them.

6. I want to meet my online friends and explore new cities at the same time. There’s a lot of people who I speak to online who I would love to meet in person. I’ve been planning on meeting my online bestie, Sarah, for months now and I would love to make this happen in 2022.

Have you got any goals for this year? Let me know what you would like to achieve over the next twelve months.

The Five Minute Guide To LinkedIn

The Five Minute Guide To LinkedIn

I’ve been on LinkedIn for a while now and for those who are new to the network it feels a bit like trying a new clothing brand that you’ve never tried before. You don’t know your sizing or the quality of the clothes until you place that order. Well I’m here to explain why you need to be on LinkedIn.

I have been told time and time again that LinkedIn is like your online CV for jobseekers and students. It is a place to share and boast about your qualifications, experience, skills and achievements. It is probably one of the first chances to make a good impression with a future colleague so it is important to keep it up to date with clear, informative information about you. Academic tutors and previous/current employers are able to recommend you and endorse your skills which strengthens your profile. For example, I am wanting to work in social media so every time I’ve done some experience with someone I have asked them to endorse me on that particular skill.

Use keywords for you to get recognised. We use search engine optimisation (SEO) to get our blogs noticed and listed high in Google’s rankings similarly LinkedIn works in the same kind of way. Have a look at job descriptions of positions that you are interested in and use those keywords in your profile. I have had a document since University with all the phrases and unusual words that I have come across so I can use them when writing cover letters, CVs and updating my profile. Just like with any other social media platform, the more people who interact with your posts the more likely it will show up on other people’s timelines who are related to your connections so get posting, commenting and engaging with people on LinkedIn.

So you’ve found the HR Manager of the advertised job that you really want, what do you do? Send a connection request and add a note. Make it personal, explain why you want to connect with them. If they accept remember to say thank you and that’s when you can start talking to them. At first it might feel a bit unprofessional then sending a well worded email but trust me it works. If a particular job interview doesn’t work out, that is okay. Stay connected, they can recognise your talents and keep up to date with your achievements; you never know where it might lead in the future.

Until recently I have always seen LinkedIn as a professional networking space and that I have to think about how I want to present myself on that little space of the internet. Unlike my other profiles I do try and pay more attention to using the correct language and tone, check my spelling and grammatically errors a bit more but it has become more personal than when I first started out. My connections are sharing more of their interests each and every day. I spotted someone sharing a sunrise and sunset pic of my local area explaining why he loves working here and it got people talking. That’s what you want to an extent. In addition to that, make sure you include a fun, inviting profile picture. People with no profile picture are put at the bottom of the search results and will be a huge disadvantage for you. LinkedIn have recently introduced a feature where you can record yourself saying your name which is super helpful for those of you will unusual names like myself.

Personally I believe LinkedIn can be super helpful. What are your tips or advice for creating a LinkedIn profile? Have you got any advice on how to use the social networking site? I would love to know your opinions.

It’s The Most Snow Fairy Time Of Year

It’s The Most Snow Fairy Time Of Year

Do you know when that brand brings out a limited edition product every year and then it disappears and you don’t know whether it will be hitting the shelves again in the following year, however, you continue to love it and use it even during the other seasons? Well for me, Snow Fairy will always hold a special place in my heart. Although I know by now that this one will not be disappearing anytime soon.

Yes, Snow Fairy is the most anticipated Christmas product that Lush sells but I didn’t really get the hype until a few years ago when I tried the shower gel. Since then, it has become its own personality trait within the Lush Christmas collection with a body spray, bubble bar, bath bombs, soap and a lip scrub.

If you’re not a one for sweet, candy scents then unfortunately your not going to like it, however, for me I LOVE it! The shower gel leaves my skin feeling soft and nourished whilst the formula has little particles of shiny blue glitter, perfect for this time of year. Whether I am using the shower gel, body spray or soap – the scent lingers on my body all day.

Are you a fan of Snow Fairy? What is your favourite Lush scent?
